The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (EURICSE), released the sixth annual World Co-operative Monitor on November 16 during the ICA General Assembly in Malaysia. The Monitor reports on the world’s largest co-operative and mutual organizations, providing a ranking of the Top 300 and sectorial analysis based on 2015 financial data. 

 

The Top 300 co-operatives and mutuals report a total turnover of 2.16 trillion USD. The world’s top 300 co-operatives operate in different sectors: insurance (41%), agriculture (30%), wholesale and retail trade (19%), banking and financial services (6%), industry and utilities (1%), health, education and social care (1%) and other services (1%).

 

 

There were 35 co-operatives from the Asia-Pacific region in the Top 300. These were from Japan (18), New Zealand (6), Australian (3), India (2), Korea (2), Singapore (2), Malaysia (1), and Saudi Arabia (1). Two co-operatives from Japan, Zenkyoren (rank 5) and Nippon Life (rank 9), figured in the Top 10 co-operatives. The 2017 World Co-operative Monitor collected data for 2,379 organizations from 8 sectors of activity, 1,436 of which had a turnover of more than USD100m.
