The Go Green Campaign (GGC) is an initiative of the International Cooperative Alliance Asia and Pacific Committee for Youth Cooperation (ICYC). Started in 2018, the initiative encourages youth from Asia and the Pacific region to combat the global threat of climate change and its impacts by tree plantation on the International Mother Earth Day.
Mr. Ahsan Ali Thakur, Chairperson of ICYC, initiated GGC with an idea to highlight the changing environment and the need to reduce deforestation for development. Based on the belief and cooperative value of ‘Self-Help and Solidarity’, the campaign manifests that youth and cooperatives can be a part of greater vision while sustaining the environment. Through this campaign, ICYC promotes the idea that cooperatives are sustainable and responsible in their approach and play an important role in protecting the planet.
The ICYC celebrated Go Green Campaign 3.0 with them World Goes Green with Asia and Pacific, Africa, and America. In 2019, the campaign was taken forward in collaboration with the Africa region. In 2020, the Campaign has been extended to the Americas. Youth in the three regions planted trees, encouraged initiatives towards climate action; propagated and promoted the Cooperative Identity in the community. Some of the highlights of the Campaign were:
- More than 17,000 trees were planted in Asia-Pacific by 300 members from 9 countries
- In the Americas, 150 trees were planted, several webinars conducted, and word spread about climate action.
The Campaign was carried out despite the COVID 19 situation (lockdown and restrictions), this year the network encouraged participants to plant trees at their homes or workplace. The Committee also organised an international webinar on Youth Cooperatives for Climate Action on 7th July to commemorate the International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) on 4th July. The theme for this year’s IDC was Cooperatives for Climate Action in support of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: Climate Action.
